Inadequate Arterial Flow into the Penis
An erection is defined when the penile organ is packed full of blood and sealed tightly in that rigid state.
If adequate force of blood flow isn’t available from the body to adequately fill the penis with the blood that’s needed in a timely manner , it becomes impossible to get an erection. This is also referred to as “arteriogenic ED”.
It’s often caused when atherosclerosis (buildup of cholesterol plaque in arteries) causes a blockage in one more of the arteries that supply blood to the penis. It can also be triggered by stiffening of these arteries with age resulting in vascular insufficiency, coronary issues, and arterial constricture from conditions like Type II Diabetes or excessive weight gain.
Penile Plaque
Most often associated with Peyronie’s disease, the buildup of plaque in the penis is a common source of erectile dysfunction for men of all ages since penile plaque can manifest in such a wide variety of states: from diffuse like salt in water to hard like a rock.
In every case, this substance hinders the healthy flow of blood into and throughout the penile organ that’s essential to quality erections.
Penile plaque is triggered from a specific instance of penile trauma or the body’s ongoing effort to heal a lifetime of micro traumas to the organ.
Additionally, certain health diagnoses cause some men to be more susceptible to plaque buildup (i.e., Dupuytrens). Certain lifestyle habits like ongoing alcohol consumption (turns out alcohol doesn’t just trigger cirrhosis of the liver) can also be a cause for the buildup of plaque inside the penis.
Venous Leakage
In order to maintain an erect state, the blood that’s pumped into the penile organ from a sexual impulse must remain there or the erection will soften during or before sexual activity.
